Lake on the border of Uganda and Zaire in the
Great Rift Valley; area 4,275 sq km/1,650 sq
mi. The first European to see it was the
British explorer Samuel Baker, who named it
Lake Albert after the Prince Consort. It was
renamed 1973 by Zaire's president Mobutu
after himself.
